#01 The Playlist : Introduction

2:02 AMKene Kingsley

Hey Beautiful People,
Happy New Month. How are you all doing . I believe we all had a great weekend/holiday in the previous month. Mine was amazing, as you all can agree with me that there's nothing more amazing than having to still roll in bed by 9am on Monday.

Today's post is to introduce a new page on the blog: The Playlist. The Playlist aims to share my favorite songs, favorite sounds, and albums that I've been loving lately.

Music is a lot like food and clothes, in the sense that they are areas that one can express themselves and expand on their choices. One's choice of music has a way of defining who they are.

For many who know me well, i love music to a large extent, I'd rather anticipate the latest music album to the latest movie (but i do like movies tho'). Its just the fact that music has a way of influencing one's mood, feelings, and sometimes thoughts.

The Playlist would be compiled every month, depending on time factor and accessibility to good albums. It will also vary from different genres and times of music, from the latest hits to some good 'ole songs.

Alright, let's dig in...

One Republic- Good Life
Album : Waking Up (2009)

Good Life is one of my favorite 'feel-good' anthems. The beat is what attracted me to this song, the infusion of drums that gave the song a marching feel with the whistling. The song basically talks about the travels and experiences of the band, and the lyrics are quite relatable. Great song, i must say.

Britt Nicole- Headphones
Album: The Lost Get Found (2009)

" Every time you feel alone, put on your headphones". That's the lyrics of the Christian Pop singer, Britt Nicole. It is also one of my favorites because of the mix of acoustics, great vocals and inspirational lyrics.

Sia- Burn The Pages
Album: 1000 Forms of Fear (2014)

Burn The Pages is the 3rd track of Sia's album 1000 Forms Of Fear. At this point, you should get that i pay more attention to the beat and lyrical content of a song before it gets enlisted on my playlist. This song tells you to forget everything that has happened in the past and look into the future. Never let anything that happened in the past put a damper on your present or future. Place your past into a book and burn the pages.

Tiwa Savage ft. Dr Sid- If I Start To Talk
Album: R.E.D (Romance. Expression. Dance) (2015)

I'm sure someone would say, finally a Nigerian song... (lol). I do like Nigerian songs, but a few do catch my interest, and Tiwa Savage is one whose songs i really like. I think its her voice that i just like. This song is one of my favorites too, and the video was just mind blowing ( Thank you, Clarence Peters). The song is one of Gratitude, thanking God for all things both good and bad. You just can't help but love this song.

Zahara ft DJ Sbu- Lengoma
Album:  Song Revival (DJ Sbu)/ Loliwe (Zahara)

Lengoma (meaning "This Song") is sang in Xhosa, a South African language. At first when i heard this song, i just interested in the acoustics of the song, till i found the lyrics, and it was just amazing. Great song, and awesome beats.

Coldplay- Lost
Album: Viva La Vida (2008)

I'm a big fan of Coldplay, and this song is one of the best in the album (if you ask me). It has this fusion of amazing rock beats, vocals of Chris Martin, and inspirational lyrics that makes it an amazing song.

Tame Impala- New Person/ Same Old Mistakes
Album: Currents (2015)

Many may not know this rock band, but if you've gone through Rihanna's Anti album, you will come across this song as " Same Old Mistakes", as she did a cover of the song and featured it in her album. Tame Impala is an Australian rock band, and this track is just amazing. I hope to get the entire album soon. This song is no different from the one sung by Rihanna, but if you try listen to the two, you'd feel the originality in the song, compared to that of Rihanna's. Well, the lyrics are quite relatable, especially when it comes to feelings and relationships. Great song.

Beyoncé- Freedom (ft. Kendrick Lamar)
Album: Lemonade (2016)

Lemonade is one amazing album that covered the cultural and emotional violence towards black women. Freedom, being the 10th track is one that gives this old Negro prison vibe with amazing verses from Kendrick Lamar. "Imma keep running 'cos winners don't quit on themselves"- amazing catchphrase there. The end of “Freedom” features a clip of Hattie White, Jay Z’s grandmother, during her 90th birthday celebration. “I had my ups and downs, but I always had the inner strength to pull myself up,” she says. “I was served lemons, but I made lemonade.”.Great song there.

Beyoncé- Ring Off
Album: Beyoncé (Deluxe Edition) (2014)

You can only find this song in the Deluxe Edition of the album. I love the song. In the song, Beyoncé addressed her parents, divorce. I'm not a believer of divorce, but then happiness is a very key factor in life, so in all you do, seek your happiness. I'm just with this song for the great acoustics and  vocals.

Last, but not the least...

Justin Timberlake- Can't Stop This Feeling
Album: Can't Stop The Feeling. (2016)

This is another amazing, happy going song. I think it should be the Happy Song of the Year ( Pharrell Williams' Happy can have a backseat for now). You should try listening to it first.

It was a hard choice for me, because there are so many amazing albums I've listened to, and have in my collection, but Lemonade is it for me because i saw Beyonce transcend from what seemed like a personal truths to some cultural realities, especially with blacks and black women. The first half of the album track listing makes us speculate a cheating situation. Sorry, with the upbeat tempo, has some sort of comic relief as she turns his side chicks into memes. (LOL).
The second half then moves to a broad perspective, giving us a notion of realness, and strength of character with Daddy's Lessons, a touch of culture with Freedom, and a happy ending as we get into Formation.
Great album..

Now that's a wrap for the playlist, watch out for more in the coming months.

Song Sources:,,, and iTunes.

Have an awesome month ahead.
